Nagawaki-ながわき
Nagawaki-ながわき
The nagawaki (ながわき,長卷) is a lesser-known Japanese polearm, distinct from the naginata in both form and function. Characterized by a more slender, moderately curved blade and a balanced length ratio of blade to shaft (roughly 1:1), it prioritizes thrusting and precision strikes over wide slashes. Used primarily during the Sengoku period, it was favored by warriors seeking a versatile weapon for close-quarters and medium-range combat, though it never achieved the same widespread popularity as the naginata. Unlike its more famous counterpart, the nagawaki is defined by its streamlined design, making it agile enough for rapid stabs while retaining the reach advantage of a polearm.
